The internet is – and has been – one of the most revolutionary human inventions of all time. It has transformed our communications and healthcare, changed how we look at transportation, entertainment, and utilities, and turbocharged science, manufacturing, and education. VPNs – Virtual Private Networks – were one of the earliest drivers of safe, secure, and in many cases anonymous internet connectivity. Although it is questionable whether standard VPN offerings today do all of these things, even if we assume that they do, standard VPN offerings still have two major shortcomings.

Firstly, standard VPNs are closed-source. Users have no way of knowing whether their VPN is actually encrypting their data, implementing required security measures, and not stealing data from a back door. Standard VPNs also compile activity logs, making it easier to trace you to your online activity.

Secondly, standard VPNs are centralized. The VPN service provider has access to the data you send and receive over their centralized servers. With all of your data stored in one place, this poses a significant security risk, and there is also no way to know that the centralized VPN services provider isn’t selling your data to other entities.

Decentralized VPNs – VPN Security for the Future

Decentralized VPNs (dVPNs) are designed to overcome all of the shortcomings of standard VPNs. They make it impossible for any sort of logging to take place, and because dVPNs are built on a network of interconnected computer nodes, there are no centralized master nodes that process all of your requests or have access to your browsing data. This distributed node structure means hacking a dVPN network is virtually impossible. To hack such a server, a would-be malicious actor would have to hack the entire network of PCs that run the system.

Furthermore, dVPNs are open-source, which allows the developer community to audit the code and identify weaknesses or suspicious functions. dVPNs also facilitate safer and faster processing of traffic.
